Five rounds later, none were. Ara-Ara went down, Tahara refused to let her stay down, and Unit-NULL ended it with one cut that went halfway through a hezrou. --- ## Overview The session picked up in the middle of the hatchery fight, on the Demon Nest floor in the dark, with roughly **seven demons** still up: barlgura and hezrou, some still swollen with ichor. The night ran in five rounds of attrition. A barlgura leapt at [[The Party|Casanova Frankenstein]] in midair and smashed into Tahara's **Antilife Shell** instead. Casanova tried to force a mystery potion down a demon's throat and spilled it on the floor. It turned out to be **Heroism**. [[The Party|Dr. Herbert Who]] breathed acid, then fired eight Magic Missiles at once. [[The Party|Celeste Valentin]] punched three barlgura to death on brittle bones. The demons got their hit in. A barlgura standing inside two sets of Spirit Guardians dropped [[The Party|Ara-Ara Avannatto]], and it beat its chest as her guardians went out. Ara-Ara rolled her first death save. [[The Party|Tahara Rahma]] brought her back with a maximized **Cure Wounds**: *"It is not your time yet, friend."* After that it was a cleanup. [[The Party|Lilly Pallywally]] took the heads and chests off two hezrou with Eldritch Blast, including **"Pink Jeremy"**. [[The Party|Unit-NULL]] told the last one to *"bite my shiny metal ass"* and then cut it nearly in half. The hatchery is clear. Further down the hall, something goes ***thump, thump***. --- ## Key Events ### 1. Lilly Opens Cautiously Lilly was up first and had already worked out her options. She kept a little **Lay on Hands** back in case someone needed reviving. She used her **Telekinetic** gift to shove a barlgura five feet out of the way, then speared it twice with **Longinus**. Barlgura fight recklessly, so she had advantage on both attacks. *"My hexblade curse guy is dead,"* she noted. Jeremy had died last session. ### 2. A Barlgura Meets the Antilife Shell Ara-Ara was very low on hit points. Her **Sacred Flame** fizzled against a hezrou: these demons shrug off magic, with advantage on their saves. *"Well, guys, think I'm going down."* She drank a cup of **Casanova's broth** for a few temporary hit points and stayed on her feet for now. Casanova flew higher, put **7 hit points** of healing into five allies, and shot a barlgura. Then a barlgura took a running leap at him, **grabbed him in midair**, and carried them both straight into Tahara's invisible **Antilife Shell**. > [!important] The DM > **"He was not expecting to slam into an anti-life shell."** The grapple broke. Casanova used **Flash of Genius**, made the Acrobatics check, and flew off while the barlgura slid down the barrier. Tahara found out his shell won't let him stand next to his friends: *"She's alive, so she can't be in it."* Unit-NULL, a warforged, can: *"You're not quite alive… you're not a real boy."* He used the shell to shove a hezrou into a corner. ### 3. The First Neck Dr. Herbert Who tried to **Polymorph** a hezrou into a goat. It made the save, so he settled for standing in front of it as a meat shield. Then Celeste got started. > [!important] Celeste Valentin > **"While he's focused on my fists, I'm gonna kick him downtown."** She followed with an uppercut, *"dislocates his jaw and twists his neck and — snap, crackle, pop — he's down… He flies back like I just finished a Rocky movie."* That was **barlgura #1**. The table called the combo *"the atomic kick and the super uppercut."* Unit-NULL went after the most wounded hezrou. Its ichor had worn off and it was *"no longer all charged up,"* down to about half. She hit it with the **Claw of the Abyssal Tide** and a **Divine Smite**. Two hezrou swung back at her and missed completely: *"They can't get purchase on my metal shell."* ### 4. The Spilled Potion Round two started with Lilly being *"more cautious than that."* She spent **35 points of Lay on Hands** on herself and drank Casanova's *"salty broth"*: > [!important] The DM > **"Some of the best broth you've ever drank… the flavor of elk."** Ara-Ara landed a **Guiding Bolt** on a hezrou. Casanova hit a barlgura with **Melf's Acid Arrow**, then flew in and tried to **pour an unidentified potion down its throat**. The DM ruled this a contested check, which the unwilling demon makes with advantage. The barlgura pulled its head away and the potion splashed onto the hatchery floor. The d100 said it had been a **Potion of Heroism**. Casanova kept the empty bottle and took a fist on the way out. ### 5. Hedwig and the Acid Herbert breathed acid over the demons with **Dragon's Breath**, then tried to Misty Step away. He'd already cast a bonus-action spell that turn, so he couldn't. He flew off instead and took a 14-point slash as he went: *"Just a frail bird… I feel like Hedwig."* Celeste charged the demon Herbert had covered in acid. She landed a kick, a left cross and a right hook for **32 damage**. > [!important] The DM > **"The stupid little bird covered him in acid, and the little flying kobold shot him with an arrow, and then you just come up and pummel him."** ### 6. Ara-Ara Goes Down The demons' turn was ugly: - The acid-covered barlgura was standing inside **both** Ara-Ara's and Lilly's Spirit Guardians, failed both saves, and kept coming anyway. It took Ara-Ara from standing to the floor with two fists. - A hezrou rolled a **natural 20** on Lilly. - Lilly took 27 more and held concentration twice. - The hezrou attacking Unit-NULL missed everything against her **Shield of Faith**. The table started calling her **"Perfect Null"** and **"Absolute Zero."** > [!important] The DM > **"He bangs his chest as the lady that keeps popping them with spirit guardians goes down."** Ara-Ara's Spirit Guardians went out. The acid had left the barlgura *"barely hanging on, almost as if he has one hit point left."* ### 7. Pink Jeremy Lilly opened round three with finger guns. Her first **Eldritch Blast** beam hit the hezrou the table had named **Pink Jeremy**: > [!important] Lilly Pallywally > **"Pop, pop."** *"It's quick, and his head's gone."* The DM: *"Pop, boom, done."* Lilly holstered her finger guns. Then: - Ara-Ara rolled her first death saving throw: *"I haven't been in this position very often."* - Casanova finished the barlgura that dropped her with a **Fire Bolt**. *"It kind of melts his face off… he dies while his face melts off."* - Casanova put a **Healing Word** on Herbert. *"You've doubled my life."* ### 8. "It Is Not Your Time Yet" Tahara dropped his Antilife Shell, stepped over the dead barlgura, and knelt beside Ara-Ara. He upcast **Cure Wounds** at 4th level, and his **Circle of Mortality** maximized it: **37 hit points**. > [!important] Tahara Rahma > **"It is not your time yet, friend. You must return to the land of the living."** Ara-Ara: *"With my brother…"* The DM: *"That's the only time where upcasting cure wounds makes sense."* On the way out, Tahara walked straight into a barlgura that had gone **invisible** a round earlier. It reappeared and bit him: *"I totally forgot about the invisible bastard."* He used **Harness Divine Power** to get a 3rd-level slot back. ### 9. Eight Missiles, Two Noses Herbert upcast **Magic Missile at 6th level** and sent eight darts, two each into four demons. Then Celeste: - Kicked a battered barlgura in the knee and punched it in the nose. *"Fragments of his nose explode into his brain."* That was **barlgura #2**. - Swung at the newly visible barlgura. - Stepped back afterward: *"Unfortunately, since I'm brittle, I'm gonna step off."* Unit-NULL scored a **critical hit** on the hezrou she had dueled at the start of the fight. Compelled Duel had ended when she cast Shield of Faith last session. Both hezrou then went after Lilly. She put up **Shield** and still took 33. *"It still saved your life."* ### 10. No More Barlgura Round four: - Lilly **Misty Stepped** into position and hit with all three Eldritch Blast beams, using **Repelling Blast** to push hezrou ten feet at a time. The DM: *"There's only three left."* - Tahara rang **Toll the Dead** on the last barlgura. - Herbert hit it with **Ray of Enfeeblement**. - Celeste threw a punch, a charging kick and two jabs. *"His heart just stops, and he just crumbles."* That was **barlgura #3** of hers, and the DM confirmed: ***"No more barlguras."*** Herbert's verdict: *"Good old feeble monkey versus the feeble horse."* ### 11. "Bite My Shiny Metal Ass" Unit-NULL **stunned** a hezrou with the Claw, hit it again, then taunted it. > [!important] Unit-NULL > **"Bite my shiny metal ass."** It tried. It charged through Lilly's Spirit Guardians to get at her. The other hezrou landed a critical bite, and Tahara spent a **Sentinel at Death's Door** to turn it into a normal hit. A second crit came straight after (*"Oh no, I can't do it again!"*), and Unit-NULL kept her concentration through all of it. ### 12. Halfway Through The last round was quick: - Lilly blasted the southern hezrou: *"This time I blow Jeremy's chest out. Just boom, through and through… No muss, no fuss."* - Casanova Fire Bolted the survivor for 19 and put a Healing Word on Lilly. - Herbert hit it with five more Magic Missiles. - Tahara stayed beside Ara-Ara and called them *"Partners in God."* - Celeste got it in a **full nelson**. The DM: *"like Boondock Saints."* Unit-NULL finished it: > [!important] Unit-NULL > **"The serration of the claw just rips between his shoulder and neck, and I just cut diagonally down halfway through his body."** The hatchery was clear. Someone at the table called it the first fight in a while that really *"felt like a challenge."* ### 13. Thump, Thump > [!important] The DM > **"You guys notice the thump, thump of the further down the hall, which we will explore next session after you guys decide what you're going to do here."** They had come off a long rest just before dropping into the hatchery, so there was no new rest yet. The talk turned to the **flesh warps**. Tahara wants to wait for a rest in the nest so everyone can be cured with Remove Curse before leaving the War-Slough: *"We might have to actually kill some time in here."* Not everyone is in a hurry. Ara-Ara: *"I'll keep mine."* Celeste: *"I like mine."* Casanova had other priorities: *"We gotta get porcelain pony back to normal."* The plan, in Tahara's words: *"Grab her brother's soul and get out of here… follow that arrow."* --- ## Notable NPCs | NPC | Type | Notes | |-----|------|-------| | **The hatchery barlgura** | Barlgura ×4 | Reckless brawlers, which gives attackers advantage. One grappled Casanova in midair, one went invisible, and one dropped Ara-Ara. **All dead.** Celeste killed three | | **The hatchery hezrou** | Hezrou ×3 | Resist magic, with advantage on saves against spells. They had been juiced with ichor, which wore off as the fight went on. **All dead**, including **Pink Jeremy** | | **Bob** | Ara-Ara's sentient mace | Went for the barlgura that dropped its wielder. *"Poor Bob."* | --- ## Locations - **The hatchery (Demon Nest, W3)**: cleared. Dead demons lie among burst ichor hoses, in the dark - **The hall beyond**: a heavy rhythmic ***thump*** comes from further down --- ## Decisions & Consequences | Decision | Consequence | |----------|-------------| | Casanova tried to force an unidentified potion down a barlgura's throat | It turned out to be a **Potion of Heroism**, now spilled on the hatchery floor | | Tahara dropped Antilife Shell to reach Ara-Ara | Ara-Ara was back up at 37 HP, but the invisible barlgura got a bite in on Tahara | | Lilly kept Lay on Hands and Shield in reserve | Healed herself for 35 and blocked a bite that would have dropped her | | Unit-NULL taunted the last hezrou | It ignored everyone else, walked into Spirit Guardians, and died to the Claw | | The party did not rest after the fight | The flesh warps and Remove Curse question are still open, and the party is pushing on toward the thump | --- ## Open Threads > [!warning] Unresolved > - [ ] **The thump** further down the hall > - [ ] **Remove Curse:** rest in the nest to cure the flesh warps before leaving, or press on?
